I think your categories are fine, but the problem seems to always be that the sellers often use the categories interchangeably. For example, they often will state "original" when what they mean is the actual piece of metal came with the case from the factory but could have been re-painted, cleaned, re-finished, run over by a bus, and so on. You have to call them on it and make sure you use very, very precise questions. If you do not get the answer you are looking for (and hopefully a guarantee from the seller) then start running. Quickly.

Please help...I think I've been bit!

After all these years knowing and appreciating Omega, the Vintage bug bit! That being said, help me understand the following regarding dials: Original - Most desireable and collectable Restored - Original but professionally cleaned - Very desireable and g...

I would add factory replacement dials . . .

. . . as a separate category, right behind original in terms of desirability. Restoration work at almost any level is a distraction for me. Or, as the village priest would say, you can only be a virgin once ;-) . . .

But with the help...

Hi Art, the village priest may have been right some time ago... meanwhile a skillful surgeon can also restore a hxxxxx and the girl is virgin once more... so why not restore a watch at a high level? Do not take my comments too serious! kind regards Erich

Precisely, Erich . . .

. . . that's why I don't mind a factory replacement dial! A virgin once more ;-) . . .

That sounds like an expensive date...

It depends on...

Hi Pat, you are right, sellers often are not precise with these terms in their description. I think when buying a watch with "restored" dial it very much depends on the scarcity of the watch! If it is a common watch which can be obtained easily (Conny, Se...

Fully agree with Erich

Nothing beats a nice all original example - waiting and hunting is a huge part of the enjoyment I experience in this hobby.

In addition to my original categories...

I would add Art's " factory replacement dial" between original and restored. Unfortunately there are unscrupless sellers and caution is required. Thanx, Miki

These categories are correct

But there is much confusion (and not even based on being unscrupulous) about how to clearly describe a dial. Bottom line is that we are all left to our own knowledge and sensibilities. Asking the right questions should generally clarify things.

Refinished or service dial ?

I am not sure what you may call this: A service dial or factory replacement dial ? But if I had to make a choice, I would prefer this refinished dial then erase that stupid T....

I prefer the second one by far!!

 By: mac_omega : February 16th, 2011-08:29
Hi Hoi, the second one looks much better -just erase the "T" and it will be a very acceptable dial... best regards Erich

As has been discussed here before...

Even a Bienne restoration can include a less than stellar redial if they no longer have a replacement in stock. They contract outside the company for these.
