When is a chronometer . . .

 By: Dr No : September 29th, 2014-04:05
. . . not ? Or, to put it more precisely and objectively, which Omega chronometers deserve to be described as such? I have five, or depending on your point of view, six Omegas that qualify on some level. Three Constellations - two cal 505 chronometer cert...

According to some sources ...

A movement to be called a chronometer receives more attention, in special on the balance wheel poising and on the overall adjustment. Another source, my watchmaker team, states that any well made movement (again, the power train) can be adjusted to chrono...

Literally, you are, of course, completely correct, Nilo. The gist of my post, though . . .

. . . was aimed at a different aspect of the subject - namely, the perspective of purists towards chronometers. A watch may be labeled a chronometer, but not carry the subjective weight we tend to associate with commonly accepted defining examples of the ...

Art, My watch friends here have a strong appreciation to the words "Chronometer" or "Chronometre" and put more value (not monetary only but also on their collections). I, as usual a contrarian, put more value on the effective accuracy. Cheers, Nilo

For Swiss watches...

...a chronometer is a watch with a movement marked with a unique serial number which has passed the official chronometer tests. The features of the hardware which go to make up the movement don't have anything to do with it, though Omega chose to develop ...

As a watch afficionado of discriminating taste, Steve . . .

. . . how do you perceive the chronometer status accorded my Genève? The movement is certified as a chronometer, but there's no physical difference I'm aware of between a cal 602 chronometer-grade specimen and its ungraded cal 601 stablemate. Art

Makes perfect sense to me...

... by the late 1950s or so Omega, like Rolex and other famous watch makers, had raised their game with their standard movements to the extent that no special parts were necessary to achieve chronometer certification. More recently the non-date Submariner...

Good question

 By: cisco : September 29th, 2014-06:24
A chronometre is a watch that spent some hours succesfully in a certification "office". Some brands reserved a whole factory to certify their watches, if you do that on a massive production with being certain that they will pass it, you can order thousand...

Thanks Art, good question

simple answer, at least for me, as I do not want to complicate my life. As you know many of these watches once proclaimed and/ or having been regulated as chronometers would't qualify as chronometers today. With time watches get deregulated and loose thei...

Very good question .... I have aksed myself the same

 By: Franco : September 29th, 2014-22:09
Hi I also collect chronometers (mainly manual wind 30T2SCRgs) and was asking myself the same, mainly prompted by what I have noticed in the last couple of years. Many sellers use the word Chronometre for Omega manual watches, hoping to get a financial bon...

JLC Mk XI.....its a chronometer in my book. I think Zirtual described the situation in a similar way to how I would look at it. I think if you took it to an extreme...lets say going back 200 years....what qualified as chronometer standard then would almos...

The Eterna chronometers are no that rare - they show up every now and then on ebay and watch trader shows... And they are labeled as chronometers on the dial... regards Erich
