Speedmaster Moon - A true mystery to me ...

Oct 24, 2014,11:21 AM

Team,

Other day I posted a teaser that was composed by a case with twelve Speedmaster watches there.

Today, after I did the photo process, here are more detailed pictures of each.

Looking each one, we can see that those watches were no "safe queen" and no one can claim "new old stock".

Those watches were used (some were abused), didn't got any "baby treatment".

They played, after years and years on the wrist, the role that a Speedmaster was designed.

A true tool watch.

This one should get a new crystal. The current one shows the characteristic plastic "craquelure" after the plastic dries.

Notice that is before 1965 when Omega started printing "Professional" on the dial.

The mystery, in question, can be summarized by the question: Why we are so attracted by the Speedmaster?

This one is post 1965. Notice the crown guards and the "Professional" on the dial.

Another shot of the same watch. Notice the "lyre" lugs that Omega maintained until today.

This one, for the "rusty" lovers, is something. Look the patina on the dial.

As I told, they were used. Notice the bezel at 5.

Another angle. Hands seems correct for the period.

Another, less hit by the years.

This one is clearly post 1969. No more Omega raised logo. Should have a caliber 861 inside.

Another shot.

Side view of a 321 powered.

When I was editing this post I was thinking why we are so attracted by a 1950's design, a movement that even the 321 cannot be see as high horology but we love each incarnation.

A similar phenomena occurs with other watches (few) like the AP Royal Oak, the Rolex Submariner  and, of course, the JLC Reverso.

The mystery is why only few stay on our minds?

Any correct answer should be worth tons of money for the watch industry.

Thanks for seeing and a wonderful weekend to all,

Nilo

Not sure if this can be considered a response to your question.

I am not even sure if a question was asked at all or if you were simply thinking aloud :D Anyway, the response is, I am old-fashioned and I don't associate myself with things that are too ornamented to attract attention. The Speedmaster to me is a no-nons...

The association with the space program is powerful. I remember, I think it was Omega's marketing person, a statement like "people comes to the boutique asking for the moon watch". But i believe that's something beyond this relation. The design, case size,...

Abel, You summarized perfectly what makes an iconic watch and you captured in words the age of adventure. I'm old enough to remember that era, the pictures of the first seven astronauts on Life Magazine, the International Geophysic Year, the Sputnik and t...

Interesting thoughts Joe. Completely agree both with watches and cars!

May be we should include a bit of nostalgia in the recipe. Sometimes I ask myself if any of the present watches (or cars) will be considered "classics" in 40 or 50 years from now. I sincerely doubt it! Cordial regards, Abel.
