Less Is More: the GRAND LANGE 1 with a New Face With monochrome azuré dials, the enlarged version of the most famous A. Lange & Söhne watch epitomises the grace of simplicity. Probably more than any other timepiece in the last decade of the 20th century, the LANGE 1 exemplified a truly new style. With the first outsize date integrated in a wristwatch and the off-centre dial displays, it instantly became a design icon when first presented to the public in 1994. Today, it symbolises the successfu

Jaeger-Lecoultre beyond watches! (from:JLC)

From time to time I try to present you some aspects of Jaeger-LeCoultre that are not directly related to watches. Not easy for sure as we are so much into watches here and they are so much into watches there!   This June I had an extraordinary opportunity to explore one of theses aspects by myself. Let me try to bring you the more out of it!   Jaeger-LeCoultre Squadra Hometime   It was a short trip to London, 24 hours in England no more but a very pleasant trip to sa

Gefica: The Review (from:Gerald Genta)

At first, I didn't want a Gefica.Sure, it was an immediately appealing design experiment based on a fascinating back-story - who can resist the Hemingwayesque overtones of big-game hunting in Africa, with a bronze-age tribal artefact on your wrist...especially one fitted out with space-age materials (titanium), haute-de-gamme innards (a very refined Girard-Perregaux base movement overlaid with GG's impeccable and highly complex bi-retrograde addenda), and the alpha-male swagger of a 45.5mm diamete

Purists London GTG - Report Part 1 - The Arrival (from:Horological Meandering)

Firstly, I want to say that I thought yesterday's GTG was one of the best gatherings of that type that I have attended, and I would like to thanks everyone who attended, Simon & everyone from the JLC Boutique and Marie & Caroline for making the day a special one. We had 22 people who spent five or six hours together sharing their enjoyment and experiences of a common passion, with no egos or oneupmanship. I truly believe that other parts of society could learn a lot from GTGs such as this, where people of

Dial printing 101 (from:Horological Meandering)

Today I had my dial printed, here a little pictural introduction to dial printing.Dial printing is traditionally done by transfer printing, also known as tampon printing. The ink is transfered from an engraved steel cliché, where it remains in the engraved recesses after being wiped off of the flat surface, to the dial.  The transferring agent, the tampon, is made of gelatine or silicon.  I am having my dial printed at a shop doing this traditional transfer printing as it has been done for the

A look at the stunning new Daniel Roth Athys II... (from:Daniel Roth)

The Athys II is the Daniel Roth’s entry level timepiece and is available in white or rose gold. It is large and flat - 42 mm wide, 44 mm and 6.2 mm thick - giving it an elegant profile on the wrist. Previously it was only available with a lacquered enamel dial in discreet white.    At Basel 2008 Daniel Roth gave the Athys II a black dial with matching Roman numerals and hands. Admittedly, nothing extraordinary has been done - the dial colour has changed and that’s all. But the new b

BULGARI Diagono Calibro 303 (from:Horological Meandering)

Very rarely am I excited about "more conventional " watches, but there are times when I come across something that I must share. Usually it would be some way out wristwatch from over the horizons of imagination. And with some 6 digit price tag to boot. But no...the Bulgari Caliber 303 is one watch that is a 100% alternative contender to take on the AP Offshore, the Rolex Daytona and any chronograph with ruggen intentions upto and above $20,000 in US currency. I never expected this to come from Bulgari

Could a Jaquet Droz save your life? (from:Jaquet Droz)

Calm your soul and reduce stress? I know these are silly questions but for people hundreds of years ago life was full of uncertainty.  Men and women looked toward mother nature for reassurrances to help them through difficult times.  It is not surprising then that gemstones have always been prized, not only for their beauty and rarity, but also for their supposed mystic and magical qualities.  This belief exists in all cultures and has lasted throughout his

More BIG pics on the Z4 and some answers (from:Harry Winston)

Regarding Z4, I think it is the coolest of the Oceans HWRT developed..yes the shiriken star was a part of legacy ..no doubt. It is good that HWRT does keep history, even contemporary ones..with Max Busser.      Z4 was inspired by ... Opus 1, the chronometer a resonance with the 2 counters. That is what HWRT wanted for a watch for travellers. But different and more modern. So this Z4 was a first for HWRT in many ways.   1) They mastered the module concept, so muc
