Case ref 2179 and 2384 first draft comparison

Hello all

Sorry, last min I had to travel to Fla for a family matter...  But I did start to take photos earlier this week of comparison photos of the 2179 and the 2384 case reference.  SOME if the 2179 and 2384 was used for a order with the US ARMY.  I just want to preface that,  the 2179 and 2384 case ref was ALSO sold into the civilian markets with the same dial that was used for the US ARMY order and also other dials configurations.

From a casual observation the 2179 and 2384 cases looks about the same ( typical dial shots...).  These cases are not the same at all in my opinion and wear differently.

I used to refer to the 2384 as the "Thin case"  US ARMY and the 2179 as the "Fat Case" years ago.

Here is a crown view shot  the 2179 is on top and the 2384 is on the bottom.

From this view point you can see the differences clear as day.  Case profiles are different , look at the lug profile and endings.  The 2384 lugs have a clean cut edge to them as opposed to the pointed ends of the 2179.

The 2179 is thicker, I do not remember the height off the top of my head.  When I get back home I will get the micrometer out and update the article.

The crown on the 2179 is also a special case the crown tube on the 2179 is extra wide in diameter and if ever had to find a replacement crown... good luck as it took me years to find one.  I will also update this with photos of the crowns removed for your viewing pleasure.

Case backs....  As Gator pointed out the 2384 ( foreground , lower watch) has a different finish caseback., larger bevel edge at the edge of the screwback.  Also the US ARMY stamping the letter spacing is much tighter in comparison to the examples found on the 2179 US ARMY watches....

another pic of the 2384 caseback

In comparison here is a 2179 case back photo

You can see the Letter spacing and caseback bevel length is narrower.

Here is a pic of both watches casebacks, I was attempting to get a single photo showing both engraving but lighting was not optimal and I was using my iphone.  The 2384 is on the top and the 2179 is on the bottom of this photo.

Now that we have seen the above photos I do not think anyone here would say that the 2179 and 2384 are "the same" .   If I remember correctly the 2179 here is a /2 and  I do not remember - ref of the 2384.

Personally the 2179 is one of my favorite steel screwback cases for a 30 mm movement.   Please to not assume that if you have an eccentric dial but no caseback stamping " US ARMY " since it was a light stamping it could have rubbed off  that you have a US ARMY run Omega.  Most likley it is NOT , as the same exact configuration ( sans the additional regualtion) was sold on the civilian market.

Good Hunting

... I never have seen the two Omega US Army references next to each other before. In my experience, the "US Army" marked Ref. 2179 are all -/2 or -/3 casebacks. Mine is a -/5, but has a military provenance via an Armed Forces basketball tournament in 1946...
