. . . in the Nokia Theater. His voice is as good as ever; he is, though, an old man now, so it was a bit odd to see him rocking his way thru some of the numbers.
The set list was also odd: covers of Curtis Mayfield, Procul Harum, Sam Cooke, the Beatles, and Jimmie Davis, with the last being the most out of place. Not familiar with Jimmie Davis? Well, he was a governor of Louisiana and a noted country and gospel singer / songwriter, and won everlasting fame with You Are My Sunshine.
Well, Cat played a rockin' version, and unconvincingly, to say the least. Then, there were multiple songs off his new album; I expected one or two, but four? All told, a third of the setlist was filled up with songs his parched fans weren't expecting to hear. He could've played Boy With a Moon and Star, or Lady D'Arbanville, or Katmandu, to far better effect.
All told, it was a worthwhile experience, and memorable, but not nearly what I was hoping - and longing - for. Still, when he was on . . .
. . . he was really on.
The guitar solo was played by Alun Davies, the only sideman carried over from his heyday in the '70s. A view . . .
. . . from the distant past.
