Stunning pictures of an awesome collection Nilo! Your thoughts...

... made me ask myself: which are the features of an object like a car or a watch in our case, that make it deserve the adjective of "Classic"?

I guess it is a timeless design, which was attractive 50 or 60 years ago as today.

In a watch, it also requires a dial which allows for a good reading of time and any other complication (e.g. a chrono) when you put it in use daily as a professional tool.

Of course the connection with exploration of the sea, space or car racing adds to the charm. Some watches made in the 1950' s and 1960' s fulfill these points: The Rolex Sub, the Omegas SM 300, the Explorer, The Blancpain FF, the JLC Geophysic, and of course the Speedy just to name a few.

It is not surprise that these watches were born in the Golden Era of Exploration and Adventure of the XX Century: they accompanied explorers, divers, climbers and astronauts in their quest for new knowledge and discovery, and shared with them their quota of danger.

It is impossible to name or view one of these watches and not connect them in our minds with these episodes almost automatically.

The Speedmaster is a superb design: case shape and size, clean and easy to read dial, a first class movement, tough, reliable and precise. It looks cool, it looks elegant, it looks sporty. I feel it well deserves the adjective: it is a classic!

For collectors, it has an additional attraction: so many variations as to guarantee a tough job and a long search to reunite a comprehensive collection of them. Some variants are very expensive and diffcult to find, others are more easy to get and at good reasonable prices. What a nice way to go collecting!

For simple users, no better attraction than to have on the wrist "the real watch which went to the Moon" in any of its modern renditions, including some with a transparent back which allows to view the nice movement ticking inside.

I love this watch so much! I need no more reasons to add some other example to my collection!

I enjoyed so much viewing the interesting examples of your friendĀ“s collection!  Thank you so much for sharing them here Nilo!
Cordial regards, Abel.

Speedmaster Moon - A true mystery to me ...

Team, Other day I posted a teaser that was composed by a case with twelve Speedmaster watches there. Today, after I did the photo process, here are more detailed pictures of each. Looking each one, we can see that those watches were no "safe queen" and no...

Not sure if this can be considered a response to your question.

I am not even sure if a question was asked at all or if you were simply thinking aloud :D Anyway, the response is, I am old-fashioned and I don't associate myself with things that are too ornamented to attract attention. The Speedmaster to me is a no-nons...

Your answer is correct ...

The association with the space program is powerful. I remember, I think it was Omega's marketing person, a statement like "people comes to the boutique asking for the moon watch". But i believe that's something beyond this relation. The design, case size,...

. . . collector, and then some. 'Wow' is all I can say. As for why the Speedmaster is universally regarded as an icon with broad appeal, my sense is the aesthetics are as much to credit as history and tradition. Black background with white lettering: as p...

Abel, You summarized perfectly what makes an iconic watch and you captured in words the age of adventure. I'm old enough to remember that era, the pictures of the first seven astronauts on Life Magazine, the International Geophysic Year, the Sputnik and t...

Some watches just "catch" something iconic....

.....I think of watches and cars in the same breath. I look at the Porsche 911 and when that car was made, Porsche caught something that became iconic. If only that was easy to do!! Very few manufacturers manage to find that Golden Goose that becomes an i...

Interesting thoughts Joe. Completely agree both with watches and cars!

May be we should include a bit of nostalgia in the recipe. Sometimes I ask myself if any of the present watches (or cars) will be considered "classics" in 40 or 50 years from now. I sincerely doubt it! Cordial regards, Abel.
